The all-female troupe of artists and educators taught—and learned—in Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

Based in Brooklyn, Urban Bush Women utilize text, music, and movement to illuminate the cultural and spiritual traditions of the African Diaspora. As part of their residency in South America, the company learned traditional Venezuelan dance in Caracas, performed in 19th century theaters in Colombia, and collaborated with local dance companies and artists in Sao Paolo.

Urban Bush Women galvanizes artists, activists, audiences, and communities through performances, artist development, education, and community engagement.

With the groundbreaking performance ensemble at its core—and ongoing initiatives like the Summer Leadership Institute (SLI), BOLD (Builders, Organizers & Leaders through Dance), and the developing Choreographic Center—UBW continues to affect the overall ecology of the arts. In all of its programming, UBW works to promote artistic legacies; project the voices of the under-heard and people of color; bring attention to and address issues of equity in the dance field and throughout the United States; and provide platforms for culturally and socially relevant experimental art makers.

DanceMotion USASM was a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State, administered by BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) to facilitate cultural exchange while showcasing the best in contemporary American dance abroad.
