JANUARY—FEBRUARY 2017

This thought-provoking company made connections across Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

Rooted in American modern dance, Stephen Petronio and his company set out to encounter a whole new range of traditions in Southeast Asia. In Thailand, the group met and danced with people of mixed cognitive and physical abilities, learned traditional Thai dance, and held performances with local dance groups. In Vietnam, they performed and taught student workshops. And in Singapore, the company worked with dance students and professionals,  secondary school students, and culminated their residency in a final performance of their own repertoire.

“A young man appears in front of me out of the bustling streets in Hanoi. Without warning he stoops down to repair the fabric peeling off my runners. Attempting to stop him is futile. So, I offer to share my lunch with him.”

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Founded in 1984, Stephen Petronio Company has performed throughout the world, including 24 seasons at The Joyce Theater in New York City, and has been commissioned by some of the most prestigious modern and ballet companies.

In 2015, the company began Bloodlines, a project to honor and curate a lineage of American postmodern dance masters. To date, the company has restaged works by Merce Cunningham, Trisha Brown, Anna Halprin, Yvonne Rainer, and Steve Paxton, with plans to incorporate others in coming seasons.

In 2016, Stephen Petronio Company began considering its impact on the future by establishing the Petronio Residency Center (PRC) as a retreat space. The site, called Crow’s Nest, is a 175-acre property which offers paid artist residencies, beginning in the summer of 2018 with Nora Chipaumire, Will Rawls, and Kathy Westwater. Crow’s Nest provides dedicated space and resources to artists to develop new work in an environment unfettered by market constraints and the pressures of urban life. The program will become part of a growing ecosystem in the U.S. dedicated to fostering a model for the future of contemporary dance.
