ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

Rooted in Bebe Miller’s decades of visionary collaborative leadership, this latest iteration of her company traveled first to Colombia, where they led a workshop in creative writing and dance for Afro-Colombian students, as well as teaching and learning technique to and from professional dancers, students with Down syndrome, and folkloric dance specialists. In Peru, the company led a lecture-demonstration, performed original repertoire, collaborated with differently abled dancers from Kinesfera Company, and danced on camera to support Peru in its World Cup soccer match.

FROM THE TRAVEL BLOG

“I danced in a trio today with dancers Roger and Viviana...As the three of us rotated roles—initiating, responding, keeping track of all three at once—the profound listening and intense focus and attention on each other made for a deeply felt connection and creative space. Our trio left me feeling vividly awake and emotionally/creatively overflowing."

—Bronwen MacArthur on a workshop at Kinesfera in Lima, Peru

ABOUT THE COMPANY

The mission of Bebe Miller Company is to support the artistic vision of choreographer Bebe Miller in creative, cross-disciplinary explorations and in creating and performing new works.

Miller’s vision of dance resides in her faith in the moving body as a record of thought, experience and beauty. Her aesthetic relies on the interplay of a work’s idea, its physicality, and the contributions of company members to fashion its singular voice. Seeking to expand the language of dance, Miller’s work encompasses choreography, writing, film, video and digital media.

Miller has created more than 50 dance works for Bebe Miller Company (BMC), performed in nearly 400 engagements worldwide. BMC has been commissioned and presented by leading venues including Brooklyn Academy of Music, 651 ARTS, Dance Theater Workshop, Jacob's Pillow, Joyce Theater, Portland Institute of Contemporary Art, REDCAT, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and Wexner Center for the Arts. BMC creates new works during intensive residencies that bring national collaborating artists together over several years for exploration, rehearsals and community activities. Pioneering the use of digital media for artists to communicate within the virtual company, this allows a sharing of its process with a wide audience.
