Limón Dance Company in Africa

This celebrated modern dance company shares its technical mastery and classic expression of movement with communities in Madagascar, South Africa, and Zambia.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

The Limón Dance Company has been at the vanguard of American modern dance since its inception in 1946. It is the living legacy of dance-theater developed by José Limón, who died in 1972, and is renowned for its technical mastery and dramatic expression in demon¬strating the timelessness of Limón’s works. The company has been committed to balancing classic works of American modern dance with commissions and acquisitions from contemporary choreographers, resulting in an astonishingly diverse repertory. The José Limón Dance Foundation was awarded a 2008 National Medal of Arts, the nation’s highest honor for artistic excellence.

In 1954, the company became the first troupe ever to tour under the auspices of the American Cultural Exchange Program. With those deep roots in global outreach and artistic tradition—as well as its exceptionally refined sense of discipline— the Limón Dance Company shares its deep roots in the American Modern Dance tradition with participants in Madagascar, South Africa, and Zambia.
