ABOUT THE COMPANY

Now celebrating its landmark 35th Anniversary Season, Hubbard Street continues to be an innovative force in the contemporary dance world, presenting repertory by the world’s most important choreographers while also developing choreographic talent within the company.

Hubbard Street was founded by choreographer and teacher Lou Conte in 1977 to showcase the talents of four extraordinary young dancers. From its origins, the company grew in prominence; Conte served as director for 23 years, building relationships with world-renowned choreographers including Lynne Taylor-Corbett, Margo Sappington, Daniel Ezralow, Nacho Duato, Jiri Kylian, and Twyla Tharp.

In 2000, Jim Vincent became artistic director and further expanded the company’s repertoire, building a legacy of new choreographic development. And in 2009, then-Associate Artistic Director Glenn Edgerton stepped into the role of artistic director. He soon named Alejandro Cerrudo Hubbard Street’s first resident choreographer. Edgerton has secured new commissions and repertoire triumphs by master choreographers including Jiri Kylian, William Forsythe, Mats Ek, Twyla Tharp, Ohad Naharin, Nacho Duato, Alonzo King, Johan Inger, Victor Quijada, Aszure Barton, and Sharon Eyal. Hubbard Street is continually touring nationwide and internationally; the main company has appeared in celebrated dance venues in 44 states and 19 countries.

Hubbard Street 2, the second company founded in 1997, tours internationally and works with students of all ages, dancing for international audiences and teaching the creative processes of dance in workshops. Hubbard Street’s education and community programs are world-renowned for their research-backed impact in schools and in the lives of thousands of children, as well as their work with patients facing Parkinson’s disease. The Lou Conte Dance Studio offers dance and fitness classes at beginner to professional levels to adults and teens, as well as a prestigious, rapidly growing summer intensive program.
